After a worker’s arm became trapped in machinery during an incident, a company has been fined.
On the 4th of January 2018, an incident occurred when an employee was cleaning a stationary conveyer belt. Another employee who was working was unaware of the cleaning. As a result, he started the conveyer belt system. The first employee’s arm became trapped between the conveyer belt and the tension idler. This resulted in serious injuries to both their hand and arm.
The Health & Safety Executive conducted an investigation into the incident. They found that the company’s system of work was unsafe. This was because the system relied too heavily on effective communication in a dark and noisy environment.
The company in question ultimately pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. £20,000 in fines was issued. £7,269.30 in costs were also ordered.
An Inspector for the HSE spoke after the hearing. ‘This injury could have easily been prevented had a robust safe system of work been in place […] Employers should properly assess the hazards associated with the operation of machinery’.
It is so important to ensure that your company has adequate risk assessments. In this particular instance, the company did not take care to product a safe system of work for employees. This ultimately resulted in the injuries that this employee sustained.
