CUSTOMER FOCUS: Lambert Construction & Civil Engineering Limited

Bio from: Simon Lambert – Director – Lambert Construction & Civil Engineering Limited based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Construction is something I was always surrounded by growing up. My Dad was a builder and I would often work with him on Saturdays and during school holidays. I always knew construction would be my career avenue and so after A-levels I went on to do a part-time degree in Quantity Surveying at Nottingham Trent University while working for a PQS company in Sheffield.
Once qualified I worked for several Yorkshire based Construction companies as a Quantity Surveyor, then a Senior Quantity Surveyor and eventually as a Construction Manager. Following on from this I had a short time as a Freelance Surveyor before realising that my aspiration was to run my own construction company and so in 2015 I opened Lambert Construction & Civil Engineering Limited.
Based in Sheffield, Lambert Construction & Civil Engineering has steadily grown over the last 3 years, starting with 2 office-based staff and 6 site operatives when we first opened, to today where we have 8 office staff and 50+ site operatives in a wide range of disciplines. We are very much a family business with reliability, professionalism, trust and integrity at the heart of our core values. We provide regional contractors and businesses in the public and private sectors with all aspects of civil engineering and construction services. Our projects range from £10,000 to £1m on social housing, educational, retail, commercial and industrial related schemes in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas.
As the company has progressed it has been important to us to continue to improve and with that in mind we contacted Adam Wade at AW Safety Management Ltd to provide a continuing scheme of training for our site operatives and also to assist with all Health & Safety aspects on site. As a result of this, in March 2017 we were pleased to be accredited with CHAS. This was a welcome addition to our other accreditations from NFB and Constructionline.
My plans for 2019 are to continue to build positive relationships with our current clients and to expand our client base. Also, using the knowledge and experience of myself and my staff, we are hoping to develop part of the company next year to undertake our own main contracting works.
I am incredibly proud to see what we have achieved so far and the most rewarding part is having a happy client at the end of each project!

What is Working At Height?

What is working at height? The HSE definition of Working at height is:
“work in any place where, if precautions were not taken, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury. You are working at height if you:
- work above ground/floor level
- could fall from an edge, through an opening or fragile surface
- could fall from ground level into an opening in a floor or a hole in the ground
Work at height does not include a slip or a trip on the level, as a fall from height has to involve a fall from one level to a lower level, nor does it include walking up and down a permanent staircase in a building.”
All too often working at height is only considered to be a problem for those in the construction industry, and yes it is still one of the biggest causes of fatalities with 35 people being killed during 2017/18. Working at height can affect any workplace, including offices, shops and warehouses. Falls from height are known to have caused 8% of the injuries that required reporting under RIDDOR, and many more go unreported as they fall outside of RIDDOR or are not reported.
When contemplating any work at height considerations should be given to how the work is going to be carried out:
- Has it been planned?
- Who is managing it?
- Are the staff undertaking the work competent and are they trained to use the equipment being used?
- Are they working near fragile surfaces?
- How often, if at all, is the equipment they are using inspected?
These questions can be addressed by performing a risk assessment, that would identify any current control measures already in place and any additional controls needed. This can be as simple as ensuring the step ladder office staff are using to access a high shelf is inspected regularly to more in depth such as using MEWPS and scaffolding.

CSCS Cards –
Steps to prevent faking it!

In recent years, CSCS has moved decisively towards a new regime in which every card issued represents a genuine qualification. While that is leading to a better qualified workforce, it also means that the cards are more valuable – and with that comes a new challenge.
It used to be pretty easy to get a card and now it’s considerably harder. Gone are the days when all you needed to do was pass the health and safety test and get an employer endorsement.
You now also have to demonstrate that you have a relevant qualification in construction which requires a commitment in terms of time and money. The card becomes intrinsically more valuable, hence attracting the attention of the criminals.
To an extent, fraud has always been an issue that CSCS has had to tackle. In the early 2000s, the main form of fraud was pretty basic, with people “mocking up the cards with pieces of plastic in their back rooms or garages”. In response, CSCS launched smart cards in 2010, which can be read electronically and are almost impossible to counterfeit. Smart cards are supported by a free app, GoSmart, which makes it easy for site managers to check the cardholder’s qualifications and the validity of the card electronically. You can read a card in a matter of seconds using a smartphone, tablet device or via your PC.
If you think you know someone using a fraudulent card you should:
- Retain the card if possible
- Make photocopies of front and back
- Record cardholder’s name and address
- Ask the cardholder where the card was obtained from
- Call the local police and report the matter
- Refuse access to site (subject to company rules)
- Forward copies of all evidence to CITB Quality Assurance Team, building 16, Bircham Newton, King’s Lynn, PE31 6RH, marked ‘SUSPECTED FRAUDULENT CARD’ with details of the crime number given by local police
Clearly CSCS is doing everything it can to counter fraud – but it also needs help from the industry to ensure cards are read electronically every time someone enters a site to establish the card is genuine and hasn’t been cancelled.
