Customer Focus A1 Flue Systems

What current projects are you working on that are worth a mention?
We are currently working on a very high-profile project for the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station in London.
Other high-profile projects include:
- Skyscrapers – such as the Shard, Gherkin, Walkie-Talkie and Cheesegrater in London.
- Stadiums – such as the Emirates, O2 and Twickenham stadiums in London and Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
- Royal palaces – all the ones you can think of!
Why is H&S important to you?
Health and safety is absolutely fundamental to what we do because everyone who works for A1 – and the third parties we work alongside – should expect to work safely in a safe environment or on any project site.
As well as having a robust policy framework, we have developed a culture encouraging employees to report and record all accidents and incidents of near misses. We employ an in-house health and safety manager, who is independently audited along with our safety management systems every three months by a third-party company.
Your relationship with AW Safety Management – i.e. how have you found our availability of services/training and how will this perhaps further improve your H&S measures?
We started working with AW Safety Management at the start 2019, and a number of our staff have been on different courses – including SSSTS training and First Aid at work. As AW Safety Management is local to us in Edwinstowe, this is very convenient for us to send staff on training courses, and a lot of the feedback we have received has been very positive. The team at AW Safety Management are also very responsive in enabling us to meet the needs of our business.

Are you wanting help in understanding mental health?

Sadly, there is still a stigma around mental health problems but over recent months there has been an abundance of media coverage raising the awareness and importance of mental health issues. These campaigns are vital to ensure that mental health becomes as important to everyone as their physical health, as it can have a devastating effect not only on the sufferer but also on their families and friends.
Did you know that:
- Stress, anxiety and depression are the biggest cause of sickness absence in our society. Mental ill health is responsible for 91 million working days lost every year
- In England, women are more likely than men to have a common mental health problem1 and are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders.2
- In 2013, 6,233 suicides were recorded in the UK for people aged 15 and older. Of these, 78% were male and 22% were female.3
- 10% of mothers and 6% of fathers in the UK have mental health problems at any given time.
- Self-harm is more common amongst younger people with higher rates being reported in women rather than men.
(Statistics taken from Mental Health Foundation).
The complications with mental health is that it can take many guises, from common causes such as anxiety and depression to more serious problems such as bipolar disorders. There are often subtle signs, which when they are all taken into consideration can indicate a problem and that the individual may be suffering from stress or one of the common causes.
As the statistics show women are more likely to suffer mental health issues, but it is men who are more likely to take their own lives. The question to consider is this: although women suffer from the condition more, are they more likely to seek help? Whereas men do not express their feelings for fear of being viewed as weak or not being able to cope, especially in industries like construction and farming. Thankfully this is changing with mental health awareness being targeted within the work environments and access to support groups becoming more prevalent. It should also be noted that many mental health problems are not necessarily work related, but the impact of them on an individual affects their work and can affect workplace relationships.
Interested in learning more and being able to spot mental health issues then why not contact the AW Safety office on 01623 821516 or email training@awsafety.co.uk to book a place attend one of our Mental Health First Aid courses or find out more information. This course will also give you to the tools and confidence to identify mental health issues along with the knowledge of where to signpost the individual to for professional help and support.
