H&S Assembly at
Brunts Academy in Mansfield

Early April saw our H&S Consultant Adrian Kirkby and our office Administrator Danielle Shaw visit the staff and year 10 pupils at Mansfield’s Brunts Academy to enlighten the students about the “Golden rules” of H&S in the Workplace (being fit for work, receiving an induction, reporting unsafe acts, stopping if anything changes) and how these rules can help to keep them safe during their upcoming work experience places.
The short presentation aimed to inform pupils of some of the safety precautions their potential employers should have introduced and also how their own part to play in keeping safe is just as important.

2500 people died in 2014 from skin cancer, 86 % of these cases were thought to be preventable (Cancer Research UK).  Skin Cancer is the 5^th most common form of cancer in the UK. It is impossible to say how many of these cases are a result of exposure to the sun at work, but it is becoming much more common in people who work outdoors.

What should I do?
Long term exposure to the sun causes skin damage and increases the risk of skin cancer.  Working outdoors on a construction site, or working on a farm (just some examples) means you will be exposed to all weathers.  Clothing can be worn to keep you dry and warm but when the warmer weather arrives, Employers should provide workers with sun protection (sun cream) that protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays, just in the same way that they provide protection from the wind and rain.

What else can I do?
Frequent breaks should also be taken so staff can seek shade and drink fluids, furthermore staff working outdoors should always keep covered (keep on their tops) and wear hats where possible.  In warmer weather why not consider changing the shift times, so staff are not in the sun for too long during peak times (between 10am – 2pm), you could also consider job rotation.
Include training on the dangers of working in the sun and the need for sun protection in your company inductions, furthermore, display posters and information for all to see and to help keep the topic at the front of their mind.

Inform and remind staff to follow the 6-point code:

1. Cover-up – protect all exposed areas
2. Apply sunscreen to all risk areas – face, neck and arms
3. Apply to clean, dry skin
4. Apply liberally every 2-3 hours, as a minimum, or more often if sweating
5. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
6. Check skin regularly for any unusual moles, spots or other changes – report any concerns to your doctor

Some employers may choose to provide sun cream for use or allow staff to purchase their own and then claim back the money from their employer – the choice is yours!  Either way, ensure that the cream being used has a high SPF.  Provide sun canopies / shaded areas for employees to seek the shade during breaks.
