After operating an illegal waste site, a Nottinghamshire man has been prosecuted.
The Investigation of the Illegal Waste Site
The Environment Agency and Nottinghamshire Police visited the site. Upon arrival, the authorities found large piles of waste. This included approximately 100 tonnes of waste from construction and demolition , 160 tonnes of general mixed, and 400 tonnes of soil. There was also one tonne of wood in addition to this.
The authorities also found evidence of burning waste on site. This included smoke from the site, scorch marks and ash on the ground, smouldering and scorched metal items, and blackened metal coils.
The authorities requested an interview under caution. However, after three invitations, the man still did not attend.
As a result, the man was prosecuted. He received a fine of £840. The man was also ordered to pay the prosecution costs of £2,000. He was charged with storing, treating and disposing of waste on land at his home without an environmental permit.
An investigating officer from the Environment Agency spoke after the case. ‘We hope this case will send a clear message that we do not hesitate to take action to protect the environment and bring perpetrators to justice.’
It is important to check that you are using legitimate businesses for waste disposal. Many companies can advertise themselves as being legitimate, when in reality they are using set ups very similar to the one in this case.
