Company Fined £10,000 For Asbestos Failings
Asbestos is responsible for around 5,000 deaths of workers each year. It is no surprise to see the HSE throw down a £10,000 fine for a breach dating back to October 2019.
The incident involved a Preston based garage door installation company. The health & safety breach occurred whilst they were carrying out work to remove an existing integrated garage door and fit a new door at a domestic property.
During installation the fitters caused damage to the ceiling, a ceiling which, you guess it, was made of Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB).
Over the years we have been made aware of the many dangers which can come from disturbing asbestos.
Asbestos can cause the following fatal diseases:
- Lung cancer
- Pleural thickening
The dust from the disturbance contained asbestos fibres and these were spread throughout the house. Affected areas included the central heating system. As a result the homeowner had to leave his home for 11 months in order for the house to be cleaned and to remove the traces of asbestos fibres.
The fibres when inhaled can cause the serious diseases mentioned above.
It is a legal requirement for anyone who comes across asbestos in their day to day work to have asbestos awareness training. Had the installers taken on board this information they would have known to put the respective safety control measure in place prior to work taking place.
