Managing Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) Can Be a Challenging Task
Since the ban of asbestos in buildings back in 1999, construction workers have taken on the task of removing the materials, but when doing so they must ensure work is completed in a safe manner to avoid health & safety legislation breaches.
One Stockport property management firm suffered the consequences of a breach back in 2018 following unsafe removal of the material.
The firm pleaded guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £25,000 and were ordered to pay costs of £3,428.
They were deemed at fault after failing to pass on important documentation to the construction workers regarding the asbestos survey.
HSE Inspector said “These risks could so easily have been avoided by acting on the findings of the asbestos survey and carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.”
